Are you fibre ready?

First things first, check if fibre’s available at your address.

It’s also worth checking if there is an existing fibre connection at your place from a previous owner. If so, there will be an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) on an internal wall in your home (usually located somewhere discreet). The ONT can look a little different depending on your region (Chorus, Enable or UltraFastFibre).

Is your ONT’s power cable missing or damaged?

Please do not plug any other power cable into the ONT – this can damage the ONT. If you are missing the power cable, please contact us as soon as possible and we’ll send you a new one.

Check your connections:

POTS ports are for a telephone. Please ignore them, as HotShot does not provide a telephone service at this stage.
The broadband service is usually connected to the first port, GE1 or LAN1.
If there are no lights working, check the power plug is properly connected.

Set up your connection:

Please check your modem (router) is suitable for a fibre connection by searching for its model, and make sure it is configured to meet HotShot’s fibre requirements before you connect it to the fibre box.

Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the grey GE1 (LAN1) port on the fibre ONT.
Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the WAN (Ethernet) port on the modem (router).
Plug the power supply into a wall socket and the power cable into the modem (router).
Turn on the modem (router) and wait for the internet connection to be established.

Using your own modem (router)?

HotShot does not provide a free modem (router). You can buy one from us, or configure your own as follows:

Search for your modem (router) brand and model to find its login IP address.
Log in to your modem (router) by entering that IP address in your internet browser.
Change the router operation mode to fibre working mode if required. For example, some TP-Link modems must be set to wireless router mode.
Change the internet connection type (also known as WAN type) to PPPoE, then enter the PPPoE username HotShotFibre and password UrDa8est.
Disable VLAN tagging. On some modems VLAN is called 802.1Q. HotShot Fibre does not require any VLAN setting, so disable any functions related to VLAN, such as VLAN tagging, VLAN ID and VLAN priority.

For guides to specific routers, see Modem Support.
